Externally there is a significant re-roofing programme, including lead guttering and insulation and external stone cleaning. Most of the clear glass windows are being replaced with stainless steel units. To help give the building the future it deserves a new heritage skills conservation studio has been established in the basement of the town hall which will house a workshop to support a new in-house specialist maintenance team. In 2023 the council will be recruiting specialists in painted surfaces, stained glass and timber to permanent council positions. Their role will be as custodians of the built fabric of the town hall, planning and implementing a programme of care and maintenance, ensuring that the town hall will remain in great condition and will be cared for by people that understand it and are trained to undertake the necessary ongoing maintenance. EMMA BIRKETT is Heritage Director, Rochdale Development Agency. Re-roofing the Town Hall provided the opportunity to increase its insulation. Groundworks to the rear of the town hall includes resurfacing the former carpark and the landscaping of Broadfield Park to form a new public space.
