For visitors, the invitation is simple: take the less travelled route. Choose a theme, follow a trail, speak to local people, and let stained glass and stone tell you stories that aren’t in any of the guidebooks. For volunteers, Treasure Ireland is a practical ally, offering help with the small but vital things that make tourism welcome and sustainable. And for everyone who cares about the future of historic places of worship, the project demonstrates that conservation and tourism can be partners, not rivals, when done thoughtfully and locally. ABOUT THE NATIONAL LOTTERY HERITAGE FUND Our vision is for heritage to be valued, cared for and sustained for everyone, now and in the future. That’s why as the largest funder for the UK’s heritage we are dedicated to supporting projects that connect people and communities to heritage, as set out in our strategic plan, Heritage 2033. Heritage can be anything from the past that people value and want to pass on to future generations. We believe in the power of heritage to ignite the imagination, offer joy and inspiration, and to build pride in place and connection to the past. Over the next ten years, we aim to invest £3.6 billion raised for good causes by National Lottery players to make a decisive difference for people, places and communities. The Walled City of Derry church trail features a wide variety of places of worship, promoting tourism in the town and benefiting both the city and its places of worship. St Augustine’s is known as the ‘Wee Church on the Walls’. It was built in 1872 to the designs of John Guy Ferguson and overlooks the Bogside.
