40 BCD SPECIAL REPORT ON HISTORIC CHURCHES 32nd ANNUAL EDITION to the dado area and the altar. The focus was on stabilising the plaster through grouting, consolidating stone, fixing flaking paint layers and reinstating lost decoration. In areas where paint layers were completely lost, the designs were reconstructed. Since the decoration featured a repetitive pattern, there was enough information to accurately recreate the missing sections. The task involved carefully completing shapes and matching colours to ensure a seamless integration with the surrounding areas. Deformations in the walls posed particular challenges, requiring sensitive adjustments to maintain visual continuity. The conservation of the chapel is not yet complete as the ceiling and upper walls still require conservation. The altar and dado after conservation: the work was carried out by Cliveden Conservation for The Friends of Albury Old Saxon Church and Dannatt Johnson Architects with the help of the Churches Conservation Trust.
