The story of the move of Salisbury Cathedral from Old Sarum in the 12th century is well known. What is much less well-known is the care that was taken in the 18th Century to create a fitting setting for the Cathedral and the important canonical houses. In a highly illustrated talk, garden historian Dr Kate Felus, will explain how, in the 1780s, Bishop Shute Barrington worked with architect James Wyatt to 'improve' the landscape of the Cathedral Close. She will also look at a number of the gardens of the houses of the Close, before presenting the setting of Leaden Hall as an in-depth case study. |
