The Function and Design of Malthouses from the 16th to the Mid – 20th Centuries Online Talk

4th Nov, 2025
Online event

Join us for a fascinating online talk with Amber Patrick, Historic Buildings & Places' industrial casework officer, as she explores the form and function of the malthouse. In this talk Amber will argue that there have always been distinct patterns based on the need for an efficient and successful malting process. This is evident in early malthouse layouts and continued to apply throughout the industry's history, even when, externally, malthouses were no longer recognisable as such. Despite being distinct, these designs curiously do not appear to be confined to specific regions but were generally widespread.
