Collapse of the Barentin Viaduct, Normandy, France

Built by British contractor Thomas Brassey, the 100-foot high brick railway viaduct collapsed shortly after completion following several days of heavy rain. Believing the lime mortar to be at fault, Brassey rebuilt the viaduct at his own expense, choosing the lime himself. The viaduct is still in use today.
