Heritage Trust Network is a registered charity, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Architectural Fund, CADW, Historic Environment Scotland, the Headley Trust, the Pilgrim Trust and through membership subscriptions and consultancy work. Heritage Trust Network began life as the UK Association of Building Preservation Trusts in 1989 and continued to support members as UKAPT until 2016 when Heritage Lottery Funding allowed the organisation to transition.

While retaining the grassroots nature of UKAPT, Heritage Trust Network supports a wider range of built heritage projects, types of organisation and corporate supporters. There are nine Heritage Trust Network areas across the UK (six in England and one each in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales). Each has an area representative and an area committee. These areas report as the representative council to the board of trustees. Each area committee organises regular meetings at which members and supporters can discuss and resolve problems, raise issues that need action at national level and share best practice.
